Opioid-Induced Respiratory Depression—Pediatric Considerations
By: Tricia Vecchione, MD, MPH; Constance L. Monitto, MD
SUMMARY:
Opioid-induced respiratory depression can be a life-threatening, albeit preventable, complication in children. It is imperative to identify those at risk for opioid-induced respiratory depression and formulate safer practices, including the use of opioid-sparing adjuncts, frequent sedation assessment and vigilant monitoring. Unfortunately, no models designed to predict the risk of opioid-induced respiratory decompensation in children currently exist, however the use of multiple, complementary monitors may allow for a decrease in serious opioid-related events.
